And just like that, Jujutsu Kaisen has concluded. With the release of JJK 271’s leaks, it’s safe to say that the series has touched the hearts of millions of followers and fans worldwide. The epic battles, fulfilling character developments, and a storyline for the books? It doesn’t get any better than this. But as with all good things in the world, it must come to an end.
JJK 270 was a treat for the fans. It saw the return of many familiar faces during the Culling Game arc including fan favorites such as Fumihiko Takaba, Hana Kurusu, and a mysterious silhouette that resembled Geto/Kenjaku. Despite being a slow, non-action chapter, it left no stone unturned and answered some of the fans’ concerns in previous chapters.
However, the ending was what intrigued fans the most. The freshman trio of Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara were back wearing their sorcerer hats as they partake in a mission downtown. They sensed an energy that may have belonged to a surviving curse user from the Culling Game. But with the trio back together, Yuji believes it’ll be an easy assignment.
JJK 271: The Trio’s Last Mission and Sukuna’s Acceptance
The manga finale starts where JJK 270 left off: the trio’s final mission. As poetic as it sounds, the first few chapters of the series also began with a mission assigned to Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara. This time, the trio is more refined in their skills and stronger in every aspect. In JJK 271, the mission concerns a curse user who can modify people’s faces with creepy, curse-like features. The victim was a girl’s boyfriend who only she saw had a morphed appearance.
After Nobara did a quick check-up on the girl, she concluded that no seals or cursed techniques were applied to her. The three hypothesized that the curse was done by a skilled user who can use their technique from a certain range. However, since they were in the middle of town, the user could be anywhere from inside buildings, on top of roofs, or hiding in random street corners.
The three devise a plan to test the theory, with Megumi’s being the most plausible (as usual). The idea is to distance the couple from the curse user’s range to render the technique ineffective. Megumi’s plan involves a 40-floor condo where they can take a good vantage point and bait the user to reveal themselves. As the couple takes the elevator upstairs, the technique is deactivated for a moment, and the girlfriend updates the trio through a phone call. Kugisaki sees the perpetrator on top of the roof, and Yuji joins her in the fray.
But as the two moved closer, their faces, now morphed with spooky features, distracted themselves from catching the curse user. Thankfully, Megumi was there to save the day. It was revealed that the user spent a million yen to buy the girl an expensive bag and held “a pretty unreasonable grudge,” according to Megumi. Yuji approaches the detained user in the car and tries to comfort him. “Not like you’re gonna get executed or anything,” says Yuji (probably speaking from experience).
As Yuji talks to the culprit, he remembers his conversation with Gojo before the decisive battle of the strongest. In the flashback, Yuji is having one last conversation with his sensei where Gojo talks about how he has dreams and aspirations of his own. If this battle decides his fate, he believes one of his students should surpass and forget about him. Yuji denies Gojo, saying that none of his students and peers will ever forget about him. “You’re such a kid. I’m expecting great things from you. Got that, Yuji,” Gojo replies.
This interaction affected fans deeply, but not as heavily as realizing that this was their last conversation before Gojo’s death—making for a fitting and fulfilling conclusion of the two’s relationship. Back to the present, Yuji appreciates that the user admitted his fault and regretted his actions. He says, “Take some time to reflect, then come help us on our next mission. I’m expecting great things from you.” The student became the teacher, and in these little moments, we see glimpses of Gojo inside him. You also want to save and recruit random boys now, right, Yuji?
JJK 271 then shows Sukuna and Mahito conversing on the pathway souls take when they die. Mahito says that Sukuna lied about his intentions of fighting for fun. “You weren’t living according to your own stature. You wanted revenge. Revenge against those who resented and persecuted that cursed, unwanted little wretch,” he says. Sukuna agreed, stating that he only lived the way he knew how. However, the King of Curses cleared it up by saying he could have taken two different pathways in life. Sukuna said it would be nice to walk a different path if given the chance to live once more.
The last few panels of the JJK 271 showed the students in different locations, possibly undertaking different missions. The final panel, however, took social media by storm. It featured Sukuna’s finger sealed and hidden in a small shed in the forest. Maybe it was the same shed where Megumi first tried looking for the finger all the way back in JJK 001! And you know what? It also felt like someone was opening it.
X/Twitter Reacts to JJK 271: Bittersweet Reactions to Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Final Chapter
Jujutsu Kaisen has ended, and fans responded by justifiably going crazy on X (formerly Twitter). It wasn’t the ending everyone expected and raved about, but it was fulfilling. The fanbase thought that JJK 271 would see the return of Satoru Gojo (including myself) and possibly an announcement for part 2 of the series, considering there’s still a finger left. But anyway, here’s how X reacted to the final chapter of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga!
JJK 271 was underwhelming for most fans. They took it to X to explain all the angles Gege missed the chance of explaining and justifying. From Yuji’s unnamed Domain Expansion and Sukuna’s unknown Heian backstory to Gojo not having a proper goodbye, these are all valid points and concerns from the fans. However, Gege is known for not spoon-feeding every little info since the very first chapter. JJK has never been text-heavy. Its mangaka prefers to show than tell.
Because of that, we would advise the fans to read and re-read to catch the missing parts. For example, through Maki and Mai, we already know how twins are treated in the jujutsu world. Sukuna was a twin as well, and through his end, we can tell he faced similar treatment, and because of that, he started putting strength above everything.
As far as Yuji’s domain is concerned, he himself doesn’t know all the details about it yet since it was the first time he used it. We do know it was his childhood home, though! About Gojo, he did have a proper goodbye, not in JJK 271, but in 236 and 237! How can we forget those beautiful chapters? However, despite all that, not giving Part 2 to his fans does make me think that Gege deserves some pouty faces.
The Sukuna panels, however, received praise from the fanbase. It showed the other side of Sukuna, one willing to try and partake in a possibly non-violent path. The King of Curses accepted his defeat royally, still walking with his head held high even in death. Being the antagonist of the series, Sukuna put up a generational performance and took the jujutsu world by storm—quite literally. Take a bow, Ryomen Sukuna!
But, of course, what would this series be without Gege Akutami? The creator of the series outdid himself with this one, contrary to social media’s posts and beliefs. JJK 271 was a mature and mild ending to a thrilling, action-packed dark manga that took over the entire world, especially during Gojo vs. Sukuna.
Jujutsu Kaisen has been a long ride that boasts exciting battles, beautiful friendships, and incredible characters. You have paved the way for the new generation of shonen manga and anime, and we will forever be thankful for your work. This is an ode to you and Jujutsu Kaisen, Gege! In Gojo’s words, “It was fun.“
